  • Is this discrimnation

I work in a factory and a lady thats been my trainer is being funny with certain things about how things should be done but only at me but acts different to other folk then she came away with i am not being nasty but ur too small to be working on this machine. Someone heard her and reported her saying thats not nice and she was trained by someone thats is ur height.

I know theres not anything that will be done as the trainer is friends with the bosses and gets away with alot of things.

How long have you worked there?

It's not great, you should be treated with respect at all times. As long as you are operating the machine productively, then your height is an irrelevance.

What you can do is raise the matter informally with her, if comments are still being made, raise a formal grievance in writing. The management and HR will arrange a meeting to find a resolution and ease any concerns you might have.

Does your place of work have Union representation? Your employee handbook should cover 'grievances'.

Legally height is not a protected characteristic in regard to discrimination. However as echat11 had said you have a right to be treated fairly at work.

Do you know if there is actually a height restriction to operate the piece of machinery? If not then there is no reason for the trainer not to ensure that you are fully trained on that machinery. I suggest that you would be best taking this to someone in HR, if you have such a person, or to a higher manager than you have spoken with.

Maybe approach it on the basis that you do not feel you are getting the right level of training on the machinery because the trainer has an issue with your height and if there is no height restriction, then this is not treating you fairly.

No theres no height resriction on machine as i found out a lady about my height trained my trainer - the matter was reported and she was taken in to office she amitted to saying it and knew she was in the wrong i have been moved to a other machine and not to go bk as i will be trained on that machine at night by someone else instead which will support me

It sounds like this has been resolved, I hope that is the case and wish you the best for your training.
