Is it legal for a company to state that due to limited availability of courses due to staffing levels that employees will have to do these courses on one of their rest days . I do not work overtime at any other time due to company only paying single rate for shift . Can they force me to work on my rest day or am I allowed to refuse this requets

Instead of approaching the issue from the perspective of confrontation, "I refuse to work on my rest day" sort of thing, why not ask for a quick meeting with whoever is responsible for scheduling the training and tell them that ideally, owing to commitments outside of work, it's very difficult for you to take part at that time, more of a "Could we reschedule my training to another day?" approach.

Essentially what I'm saying is, if you start this off my getting someone's back up, you stand a much lower chance of success than you do if you ask the question nicely. Seems obvious, but it's an important difference. Get someone's back up and they're quite likely to try and make you work on your rest day purely because of the way you approached them.

Can they legally make me work on my rest day is my question . I am contracted for 45 hours a week , which I fulfill my contract to do . They do not ask due to staffing levels if staff could complete training on rest days that would help out at the present time . Instead they state the due to staffing levels the training courses will have to be completed on a rest day and overtime paid for this. Back already has been truly been put up . And as stated I do not do overtime as single rate is paid . If I am going to give up my valued rest day , it will be for at least time and a half for week day , or double time at weekend . They already pay for agency staff to cover staffing levels , whom get 30% more a shift than permanent members of staff and only get about 50% of work completed in shift. Would be more financially beneficial to pay staff a better rate . Your answer gets my back up more , as , I was asking the legal aspect of the situation rather than how to ask in a non confrontational way as to not work in my own time off in which I normally choose to stay away from work .
