My sons apprenticeship

My son is 22.

2 and a half years ago my brother got him an apprenticeship with a business that he does subcontractor work for.

My son was ill recently with a cough etc and called in sick to work. He was intending to do a lateral flow test and PCR test to ensure it wasn't covid.

His boss (doesn't believe in covid) told him he had a cold and needed to come to work. My son who was genuinely ill lied and told him the LFT came back positive but he still wanted him to go to work! He went into work and people refused to work with him because of the positive LFT and he was sent home.


I wanted to know what was going on and called my brother who called the guy my son works for and my brother told me about the lateral flow test.

An hour later there was a knock on my door. It was my sons boss had come to speak to me and my partner.

My son was so annoyed and quit his apprenticeship.

he had wage slips for the past few weeks due to christmas but today he got paid a lot less than his wage slip said he should. He is owed 16 days holiday so there were no monies owed to the company.


Questions:

Can an employer go to parents of a 22 year old to complain about them?

Can they pay less than what is stated on a wage slip?

Sorry to hear about the situation with your son. In answer to your questions:

1. Not a normal course of action by an employer in my opinion. Your son is an adult and any issues his employer has, should be dealt directly with your son.

2. If your son has not been paid what he is due then this is potentially an unlawful deduction of wages. I would suggest that in the first instance your son emails his now ex-employer to request an explanation of why he has not been paid what he believes he is owed. See what if any explanation is given. If this is not satisfactory then there are further steps he can take which is to start an ACAS Early Conciliation process prior to making and ET claim if that does not resolve the issue.
