  • Social Media Policy Enforcement

    Hi all,

    New to the forum.

Having a little of trouble at work.

Essentially in my spare time I have making a drinking game/mobile app.

I am looking to get more into software development so I figured making a post on LinkedIn to showcase my app would be the perfect idea to showcase my skills.

However my work place is now claiming that my post is in breach of their social media policy and that I should remove it. However they haven't been able to say where exactly in the policy I have breached. They just say that a drinking game is could be considered against their values and beliefs and my LinkedIn shows a clear link between my app and my employer.

However we are allowed to have another job outside of our working hours if we wish.

The issue I have is that LinkedIn is like an online CV and lots of recruiters use it so if I can't show case my skills it may affect my future employment opportuntiies.

Does anyone know if this is enforceable? Could they fire me if I refuse

    KR

How have you displayed the details of your app on the Experience section usual detailing work history or does it appear under the skills??

It may just be a case of making sure that there is absolutley no connection to this drinks game app and your current employer in terms of where you place it on your profile.

LinkedIn is effectively your online CV, however employers do get sensitive about what information is displayed if there is any potential to come into cconflict wiht their values/ethics.

In the social media policy is LinkedIn mentioned as one to the platforms covered?

From a non employer perspective- the concept of a drinking app and encouraging the consumption (possibly in excess) of what is essentially a toxic product may not reflect well on your employer. Of course you do not present many details such as the target audience and the target audience and products of your employer. For example if your employer produces alcohol , part of its licence may be to promote support for 'problem drinkers'.
