  • Redundancy - Zero hours casual vs full-time staff.

    Dear helpful knowledgeable friends,

My company are currently coming to the end of redundancy consultations. It is a theatre venue and there are 3 full-time technicians with separate specialisms and job titles, and 1 casual crew member currently on a zero-hours contract left in the process.

The company have agreed not to change job titles or terms but have asked the technicians to temporarily take on extra duties across specialisms.

Now for the bit I find difficult to fully understand…

The company have said that there are enough hours to keep 3 full-time posts, but in what they are saying is the only fair way forward they are asking the 3 full-time technicians to interview along with the zero-hours casual crew member for the 3 jobs. If the full-time members are successful, they get to keep their current job title and terms. If the zero-hours casual crew member is successful, he will be given a new job title, and one of the full-time staff will be made redundant.

I don’t understand how 4 people can interview against each other for different roles. I would think that if they are not making the full-time roles redundant then they should just keep their jobs and the zero-hours casual can fairly be made redundant as their job will no-longer exist.

Any help on this, or suggestions where I can find out more would be most appreciated.

    Many thanks,
    K

Is the situation one of redundancy or restructuring. In the first instance the number of jobs of a specific type are being reduced in the latter jobs are being taken out of the organisation structure and new roles are created, giving staff whose jobs have been taken away the opportunity to interview and be recruited into the new roles.

I just need to understand which of these situations you are in.

Hi, and thanks for your reply.
It is a redundancy process and the company have specified that it is about reducing head count and is not a restructure.

I should add that the 4th person has just over 2 years continuous service.
