    Hi,

    Asking for friend.

    Please could you help me to calculate holidays entitlement ideally with formula how to do it.

    My friend is working part time(after maternity): 3days Monday-Wednesday.
    Before that, she was working full time for over 4y with same company and her entitlement was 24 days plus bank holidays. On gov website there is information that she should have 16 days on minimum entitlement, so assuming that, her should be around 18 days but not sure how to calculate it.

    And 2nd question if she is not working on Fridays we are assuming that she is not entitled to substitute day off for Friday bank holiday, which is fine but heard different opinions

    She still has got old(full time contract), part time was agreed in person during 'return to work meeting', nothing in writing.

    If a part-time employee is normally scheduled to work on a bank holiday and receives this day off as a fixed holiday, their holiday entitlement should automatically be reduced by one day.

    If an employee is not normally contracted or scheduled to work on a day when a bank holiday falls, this does not affect their holiday entitlement as it is not a working day.

    The easiest and fairest way of calculating entitlements is to deal with all the holidays as an inclusive amount, so in the case of your friend the formula can be broken down as follow:

    1. If as a full time employee she would be entitled to 24 days annual leave plus eight bank holidays, this gives a total of 32 days per annum.

    2. This can be expressed as 6.4 weeks’ holiday (32 ÷ 5 = 6.4). Calculating leave in this way will ensure employers always meet the statutory minimum.

    3. You can then easily calculate the part time total entitlement, so for your friend working three days per week the entitlement will be
    6.4 x 3 (days) = 19.2 days holiday per year.

    The employer cannot round this down to 19 days, however if they wanted they could round up to 19.5 days but they do not have to.

      Thank you Ula for the fast response.

      Just for confirmation as still can't understand bank holidays things.
      The office she is working in is always closed on bank holidays, so this Monday she will be off (and get paid as she is on the salary not daily rate/hourly).
      If she is not working on Friday she won't get the subsidiary day off but it is still be counting toward her yearly entitlement?

      or entitlement will be 19,2 days - 5(Mondays & Wednesday bank holidays in 2020) = 14.2 but the minimum is 16 so she is getting 16 days?

        Your friend based on full time equivalent of 32 days inclusive of bank holidays will be getting pro-rata entitlement of 19.2 days from which she will need to take bank holidays.

        The statutory minimum is 5.6 weeks which includes bank holidays and equals 28 days and for someone on 3 days as per your friend they would be entitled to 16.8 from which they would have to take bank holidays.
