  • Advice on commuting to work

    Hi all,

I would greatly appreciate any advice which can be offered.

I know everyone is facing challenges just now and this is not a huge problem in the scheme of things.

However, my partner is in a bit of a predicament.

She has worked for Sainsbury's for almost 3 years as a general assistant and has always tried to be loyal to the company and had only 3 days off sick in that time.

As I had a new persistent cough government advice was that we had to self isolate for 14 days which we are doing. She came under a lot of pressure from her work and was asked by her manager just to come into work anyway which she refused. This 14 days is now coming to an end and thankfully we both feel okay. However, the now reduced travel timetables mean that she would need to spend 3 hours each way commuting on public transport instead of the usual 1 hour. She does not feel comfortable spending up to 6 hours a day, 5 days a week commuting on public transport in the current situation. However she knows she is likely to face pressure from her work to do just that and does not know where to turn. She also feels that if she does not continue working she is letting her colleagues down which is wrecking havoc with her mental health. On top of this I have hypertension and my father is 69 and is on medication for his immune system so if she picks the virus up at work it could be deadly, just as it is for many others. Her contract requires that she would have to give 4 weeks notice if leaving.

Can anyone offer any advice on a route out of this situation?

Thanks again for any advice you can offer.

Has she spoken to HR about her concerns?
