  • Work Related Stress

After some really stressful times over the last couple of years and then a really stressful period at work I had to see my GP who signed me off stating work related stress for 2 weeks, I have been back to GP as things are still not good with lack of sleep and lots of anxiety so been signed off a further 4 weeks and put on meds, my employer is now on about making a welfare visit, my worry is the lack of empathy I have over time been shown by my line manager . When my personal issues started some 3 years back my then managers and Principal were very supportive but they all got forced out and since September have had a whole change of senior management.
Due to a fall at work I was referred by company to outside Occupational health who made recommendations that I need to be given time to relax during the day and managers to understand the pressure but this hasn't really happened and much of the other recommendations have* been ignored, for example due to pre existing back condition and following the fall it was recommended that a workstation assessment be made of my desk and chair, that was back in December has still not happened and it took my employer nearly 2 months to do the return to work interview which was just a box ticking exercise with little empathy shown by my line manager who seemed put out that I had asked on several occasions for the return to work to discuss the Occ Health report.*
I am worried about this welfare visit and the likely pressure I will be under, Do I have to go with this and let them come visit, I am not in a union, the company doesn't allow it, therefore am I within my rights to record the visit or have a friend present?

What does it say in your company sickness policy regarding home visits?

Have you given your express permission for your employer to visit you at home?

    An employer
does need to maintain contact with staff who are off sick however they should speak to their employee about setting up channels of communication. If a meeting is necessary then ideally you should be given the choice of where to meet, at work, at home or in a neutral place. Other methods of contact could also be explored such as telephone or video conferencing if you would feel more comfortable with that.
