  • Confused about situation

Hi my name is Roger I am an engineer in a large company, I have worked with the company for 11 years and have a contract*

My situation is quite difficult to explain.*

I was called into my managers office last week and told that I would be moved to another site, it is in our contract that managers can do this.*

My problem came when I was told I'm being moved to site ''X'' which has new equipment in which I have never had any training.
Also on the site I am on currently their is employees who are trained for the new equipment at site '' X''but I am being selected?*

i explained that to my manager that I do not have have the training needed, manager gets wound up about it and says'' if you don't go to site''X'' I will move you to site''Z''and that would really kill you''. <not nice to be told this*

Training can be provided but at my age it will be difficult for me, although manager believes I have already had the training.*

after he said this I told him I am not happy about what he is suggesting and what he has said to me and I will be seeking further advice.*

site '' Z'' is one of the worst sites in the company < threat?*

He has already put me on rota for Site X and I feel I am being forced into something I'm uncomfortable with.*

please advice me on what I should do next as I feel very stressed about what is happening.*

I have no legal experience and I don’t know the culture that exists within the organisation.

It may be that they just want to make things difficult for you, in the hope that you leave the company of your own accord. I can appreciate how stressed you feel about the situation.

In terms of what you can do - It probably depends on how strong you feel about the situation and whether your Manager will back down.

It does appear to me that this Manager may have bullish streak, bullies sometimes capitulate under a bit of pressure, alternatively he may make life even more difficult for you.

However it may not help his cause (in the longer term) by the fact that appears to be blackmailing you - '' if you don't go to site''X'' I will move you to site''Z'' and that would really kill you

Perhaps you should consider putting something in writing to him, reminding him - that you haven’t been trained in the equipment, but there are colleagues who have been trained and would therefore be more suited to working at site X than yourself.

It could be that he's unable to find anyone who will volunteer to move to site X and he’s just working his way down the pecking order.

    Stay strong and good luck.

Firstly what does it say in your contract with regard to being able to move you to another site?

Make some notes of the meeting that you had with your manager whilst they are still fresh in your mind.

Do you know why your manager would think that you have already had the training on that piece of equipment?

How much of the job at site X would be using that equipment?

Yes certainly feels like bullish threatening behaviour.
i was his choice as I do not normally say no and always helpful.*

*however I have managed to arrange a meeting with the manager and the manager above him. It is tomorrow.*

i do feel I need to email the series of events to make it recorded that I did report this matter to the manager? Or manager above him?*

having spoken to the union they have advised me not to put anything in writing/email until after this meeting

i do feel that he may well just apologise in the meeting in the interest of not escalating matters?

*I am still confused as what the correct thing to do is?*
        *

        *sorry for all the questions*

          In response to Ula
*contract says we can be moved site to site which Im ok with.*
*but does not list any action for suitability e.g I am not trained for site '' X''

i have made notes of everything word for word.... But as others at work have said to me, these are your words against his..?*

*regarding why he thinks I'm trained is because people have gone to site ''X'' and got the training whilst they are on site. An option he did not give me

*bottom line what is getting to me is the fact we have trained people for site '' X'' who are not being asked...because they have a mouth on them and they do not like to be moved from site''A''
I feel I was the easy pick.*

I recommend you record the meeting with your manager and his manager. Make it clear that you don't have the training and ask how they intend to address that. Also ask why you have been chosen for this when others there do have the necessary training. Maybe you can get to the real reason why they are doing this, and if you can get a recording of it, so much the better. Don't tell anyone you're recording. Just use a voice recorder app on your phone and start it before you go into the meeting. Even if you don't end up using the recording, it's better to have it in case the situation escalates, and recordings of in person discussions are legally admissible as long as one person being recorded knows about it.

Update Metting canceled manager has allegedly booked today and tomorrow off

*strange as this meeting was confirmed last week Thursday with the manager.*

*it will now take so long to arrange a meeting < do not know whether I should push for one or not?*

*and now colleagues are treating me funny because I complained/voiced my opinion /rights?*
*as the potential outcome could be one of the trained workers get moved.*

*This is whole scenario could have been avoided had he the manager/management chose an employee that already has the training for site '' X'',* as this employee has the necessary training and has to move as per contract terms and conditions*

Dc32 yes I have thought about recording the meeting but was worried about the legal side of it...

*can I record without anyone knowing? And use this later? .
As telling anyone Im recording will not go down very well with the union or management I believe.
              Thank you
              Roger*

Update - now it has been a few weeks since this all started.*

                No meeting?*
*No answer to reason why I was being selected / picked on?*

*No response to why the management had accused / assumed? Me of already having the training?*

*everything I had to gone through seems to have been brushed under the carpet.. I feel I should have some sort of explanation as to why the management treated me.*

*I do not know the correct way of requesting this as up until know my requests/questions have been ignored. So I think maybe a recorded letter or email? Requesting either a meeting or answers.*

                Can please advise*

You need to put your request in writing which is either a meeting to discuss and then list what you want to discuss or write out your questions and request a written response.

If this does not progress things forward then you next options would be to raise a formal grievance.
