  • Agency worker - possible discrimination?

    Hi there.

I'll try to keep this short!

I'm an agency worker, and was assigned to a temp job which was cut short due to a complaint from the line manager(or she was acting as the head of our section), and may have been let go based upon discrimination.

For context; I'm British and the section I worked in was made up predominantly of EU workers (as is the line manager).

I received a call on the 3rd day from the agency telling me that the company won't have me back. It turns out that the female line manager complained that I stood around with my 'hands in my pockets' for most of the time. There were periods of downtime, as I needed to await further instructions as to what task to perform, and was also waiting for labels to be printed for the boxes (someone else was in charge of this).

I was working within earshot of the line manager, and I heard her briefly complain to someone else that she doesn't want any more English workers and was going to call the agency re this (I mentioned this to another British agency worker, and we spoke at length about this and came to the conclusion that we would'nt be there for much longer). Btw, the other Briish agency worker was asked back the next day.

As an aside; there was another young agency worker (EU) who I got on with, and he claimed that some of the EU workers were complaining about myself and the other British worker, so I feel there was quite a bit of tension there.

Anyway, I feel that I was let go for some spurious reason and unsure as to where I stand.

    Thanks.

Have you spoken to the agency about the situation?

Has the agency found you some new work?

Hi. Yes, I spoke with the agency about it as I felt unfairly treated. No, they haven't called me yet for any more work.

Can you actually prove what was said, did anyone else hear it?

Lets be honest here, Eastern Europeans (particularly Poles, possibly because they are in the highest numbers) have a reputation for hard work and few complaints. If the other British agency worker was asked back- could it possibly be something you did?

If I ran a business I think I would be looking for Eastern Europeans.
