  • Help please, facing insuborniation dismissal.

Hi, I'm need of some advice please.

The place where I work suffered a disruption, a fire in a unused area above rest room/toilets/corridors/changing room, resulting in no power or water in these areas. Also 90% of the lighting in the working area and the fire hoses in the work area were not working due to the lack of water supply. On the day of the fire (after the fire service had left) I informed my supervisor that I did not feel safe working in the main building due to the lack of lighting and the fact the fire hoses were in operable and worked the day in the communal areas cleaning up the mess instead. I asked about washing and toilet facilities and was told to use the neighbouring businesses. Towards the end of the day, my supervisor asked me to go upstairs and start to clean up where the fire was, it was dark, no power , burnt pieces off wood hanging from the ceiling and very large holes in the floor, I was left on my own with a torch in one hand and a shovel in the other and was expected to get on with it. The next day I turned up for work at 7am and the situation was exactly the same and I felt it was unsafe to work in these conditions (I was expected to work as normal in the main building after I had finished the previous days request of clearing up upstairs). I rang my ops manager to express my concerns and his first response was to say "What's up with you? You know in times like this we just get on with it" I asked about the fire hoses not working and he said they a separate auto system that activates auto water cannons, I said these do not reach everywhere hence why there are fire hoses located in various locations. I also asked about the lighting and he said there was on light on which was near to where I would be working and there are lights on the vehicles we use. I again expressed that I felt it was unsafe to work in those conditions and said that I would leave for the day. I was not rota'd to work for the next couple of days and thought the problems would be rectified on my return.

Since my return I've been informed that I'm to face disciplinary for 'Gross insubordination' was likely to be dismissed.

So any advice on what I should do would be greatly appreciated.

BTW, I work in a large waste recycling building with lots of large machinery and vehicles and it's a very place to work.

How long have you been employed by the company?

Do you know whether the fire service has deemed the affected area of the building to be safe?

Were you given permission to leave for the day?

Did you ask to be given other duties for the remainder of the day?
