  • Minimum rest times

I am hoping that someone can settle an argument.

My friend is a RGN and I am a support worker.
He has to have a clear 12 hour rest period between his shifts, according to him it is a legal requirement for healthcare workers to have a 12 hour gap between shifts.
Since I have worked in care, I have done multiple (sometimes 3/4 in a week) shifts where I finish at 10pm and start again at 7am, I have also done 9 days straight shifts (apparently that is illegal too).

He also says that the shifts where I work a late shift, sleep the night at work and then do a full morning shift are illegal too!!

Is this the case, if so, what can I do about the fact that I am being told I have to do them?? I don't mind the quick turn arounds (although it gets a bit painful when literally each week you are doing 4 of them) it's the sleeps. I am meant to be on Amatripzaline at night. I can't take them because I sleep too deeply and wouldn't hear someone getting out of bed! The next morning I can barely walk, I'm in agony and I'm given people to support out in the community.

    Any ideas??

    Cheers

    Callie

Reading this website (https://www.rcn.org.uk/get-help/rcn-...-and-night-wor) it seems that you are supposed to have an 11 hour break between shifts, and residential time (even if spent sleeping) is a working shift
