  • Shoplifting- Will I have a criminal record?

Hello, this is something that's been on my chest for the longest time. A few years ago in 2015 when I'd just turned 16 I got caught shoplifting in Superdrug, I took two brushes (under £10) from a makeup package but paid for something else. As I left the store a security guard asked me to come into the back. They asked me to open my bag and asked my why I had these items in my bag. I immediately started crying and having a panic attack, I'm not sure what impulsed me to do it but I was young, foolish and regret it to this day. We went into the back room and he gave me two options, call the police or call my family. They called my family and my mom explained on the phone that I'd been to see my mental health psychiatrist that day. Long story short they said something along the lines of that they couldn't charge me because of my mental health and instead they would take my picture and I'd got a lifetime ban from all Superdrug's.

I completely realise that this was an awful mistake, at the time i had severe depression and a chaotic behaviour that led me down a path of attempting suicide and hurting myself. I'd done it a few times before but never been caught, prosecuted, contacted or whatever. Looking back now I realise that it was an awful mistake and I was really ready to destroy my own life. I'm a different person now and ready to move on with my life.

I was never given an RPL or asked to pay any fine, nor were the police contacted. I'm just wondering A) will this be on my criminal record and B) will Superdrug still have my picture in their database however many years on?

    a) You will not have a criminal record - you were not arrested or charged, no police were involved. Please just put it behind you and forget it. You have punished yourself more than enough now for a daft mistake.

    b) It seems unlikely but you could write to them and ask for any data they hold on you as you are entitled under GDPR (Data protection regs) if you particularly want to know and particularly want to shop in Superdrug.

      Firstly, welcome to LB

      1) Try not to worry ... there will be nothing to see on any criminal record check/file as you were not prosecuted at the time and no police were involved either.

      2) I very much doubt that Superdrug will have kept your picture, and in any case you probably won't look the same now xx
