What to do.

hi all

just looking for some general advice following suspension from work.

last week I was called into a meeting room by my line manager and told that she needed to ask me some questions. She asked and I answered at the end I was told I was being suspended on full pay pending investigation and that I was not to contact my colleagues.

i do not know what the allegation is against me but must be serious due to being suspended. I feel like raising a grievance against my suspension as I do not think it was handled correctly for the following reasons

1. Not told what the allegation is
2. Manager was asking me questions and taking notes so could this be classed as an investigation, I was not informed that it was.
3. Was not told how long my suspension can be expected to last
4. Not given any point of contact should I have any questions
5. Not escorted from site - I thought this had to happen following suspension


i am at a complete loss as to what I am supposed to have done and under a great deal of stress due to the damage the suspension alone is most likely doing to my reputation.

from what I have read it sounds to me if I possibly have a case for unfair suspension so should raise a grievance

The suspension of an employee is something an employer is usually entitled to do pending an investigation of gross misconduct or some other serious disciplinary matter.

The right for your employer to be able to suspend you will usually be set out in your contract of employment or staff handboo Usually, you will be suspended on full pay, which in this case from your post, you have been.

Even if there is no right to suspend in your contract, providing there is a suitable reason and you suffer no detriment i.e. you continue to receive full pay and other usual benefits then your employer will be deemed to have acted reasonably in deciding to suspend you. A suspension should be for the shortest period of time whilst the investigation takes place, and you should be updated as to how long the suspension is likely to last.

Following your suspension, you should be informed in writing that you have been suspended, a view as to the length of the suspension together with reasons for the suspension, you may also be given details of what you can/cannot do in terms of contacting work colleagues and going onto your employer’s premises. If the suspension happened last week then I would hope that this correspondence should be with you soon.
