  • New Job Salary Error

    Good afternoon,

    Recently I applied for a new job, was interviewed, and after a two week wait was offered the position.

    Despite no written confirmation of my new job, I was encouraged to hand in my 28 days notice ( I leave on Friday 22nd December ).

    However, two weeks after being verbally offered the role, I was contacted and informed there had been an admin error, and the salary was 7k less than I had been informed; the exact salary had been confirmed to me prior to my interview, during my interview, and when I was verbally offered the position.

    I am now in a situation where I cannot go back to the old job, and the new one is paying 5k less than what I was earning in the first place.

    I'd just like to know if there is anything I can do regarding the above matter. Any advice gratefully received.

    I am not sure who encouraged you to hand in your notice before written confirmation of the offer and although I would advise that no-one does this, it has happened in this instance and we need to see if we can do to anything to resolve it.

    I would suggest that you go back to the new company in writing and explain that on three occasions you were given notification of the salary being offered and you anticipated, based on that fact, the written offer provided would detail that salary. Explain that this is a drop in your current salary and that if you had been aware that the final offer was going to be less that notified you may not have handed in your notice from your current employer since it puts you at a financial disadvantage. You may have more weight to your view if it was actually the new company that encouraged you to hand in your notice and in which case I would add that into the correspondence you send.

    Is there anyway in which your current employer would accept a rescinding of your notice?
