Re: My 6 year battle with my LEA is over

[quote=scottishlass;51070]He sounds lovely Baxter, and I hope you get the help he needs, my 14 year old has just been diagnosed with Aspergers,I am waiting for a meeting with the school and his Psychologist to see what they are going to do about helping him,the main areas he needs help with is social skills,he is trying very hard, and they have improved at school,English and Maths he is not doing as well as he should be,his writing is hardly legible which isn't helping with his grades.

Thats exactly what I mean, your son is 14 years old and just been diagnosed with Aspergers, which is the clinical name for Sams Autism, why has it taken until hes 14 years old before they made this diagnosis? with Sam its you can see, just in the way he acts that there is something "different" about him and his peers, even when he runs hes quite gangly, but they are very loving kids and do make eye contact with you, and always tell the truth, whatever the outcome, its his understanding of certain phrases and everything has to be explained to him in a way for him to understand things in his own head, then hes fine, he got told off from his dad when we were going on holiday for "acting the goat" and he came crying to me saying Dad just called me a goat,
Its his energy time now, the same time every night between 9-half 9 he starts skipping around our rooms, telling me the time every 2 mins..is it son ha ha still a little star..B

Re: My 6 year battle with my LEA is over

You are right Baxter I don't know why it has taken so long,he had a problem with his hearing when he was small and a lot of his problems was put down to that.

My eldest son was diagnosed at 13/14 with ADHD he had been thrown out of school 2/3 times for his behaviour.it was the school psychologist that picked up on it.
I was worried that this might happen again so asked for him to be assessed then, they didn't pick up anything and again put it down to his hearing problems. We just put it down to him being shy and lacking in confidence. One of his teachers complained about him when he was in second year at the academy so again he was assessed in school, they spoke to me and asked if they could then refer him to the mental health department for assessment.

He does have a problem with eye contact,he is okay with me,but finds it very difficult with others,he is trying very hard now and I have to remember not to answer for him ( which I have been guilty of for years) so we are all learning,I have to encourage him to talk a bit more and not just use hand gestures.

I know what you mean about being gangly, he is almost 6FT tall and size 13 shoes, he does tend to stoop a bit ( I think so he doesn't look so tall)

Re: My 6 year battle with my LEA is over

        Hi Baxter,

I am a Special Educational Needs Learming Support assistant, and I just have to say it is disgraceful just how TIGHT the LEA have got at issuing children with Statements.

It is so frustrating for both the parents and the teachers that can so clearly see that the child is in need of support. It is so unfair on the child involved too, these so called naughty children, arent naughty at all just being made to struggle through a day of education which they clearly dont understand or comprehend and spend the day frustrated and upset, its like being dumped in a foreign country where you dont speak the language and you dont know there laws or protocall, and being shouted at one minute and ignored the other. Every child has the right to be educated and that school day should be fun and exciting time because thats when they learn the best.

The child I currently work with I am employed to work 1:1 with him every morning of the school week and have been working with him almost a year. The difference since he has veen getting support is incredible, everyone can't believe the transformation, he didnt even know what a number was but can now order number lines count to 20 add up and take away. Its just basically taking the lesson plan but adjusting it to there level.

I also do the speach and language with him and the experts also cant believe how far he has come in such a short space of time.

The sad thing is I have been told I am working my way out of a job, isn't it disgusting that they are so ready to take away the support that he so badly needs just because he is making such wonderful progress.

The parents cant thank me enough and say he is actuallly tired when he comes home from school and calmed down so much instead of bouncing off the walls, simply because his brain is being stimulated and he can now interact better with the school day and his peers.

It has been like watching a flower blossom and I am so honored and priveleged for being able to work with him.

I am so pleased you have now managed to get him support, it will change his life, obviously the statement will be assessed once a year, but keep on it and don't take no crap from them. the LEA have a damn lot to answer for, well done to you on your success.
