  • Halfords Small Claims Court

Halfords performed an incomplete service on the car. They gave the car back to us in an extremely dangerous state, like there was literally no oil in the car. We didn't notice how bad it was until two days after the service was completed. It was so bad that it shouldn't have even been on the road, oil was pouring out of the car due to the crankshaft oil seal needing repair. How they missed this is just unbelievable when they're supposed to be checking the engine oil and had the car for 4 hours that day.

After confronting them about the huge mistake, they were going to charge us £416 for a repair so we took it to Protyre who would do it cheaper. After the car was already at Protyre, Halford's called and said they would cover the repair free of charge but refused to refund the service. At this point, Protyre had already completed some of the labour and charged us £156. The car ended up being too dangerous to be on the road and due to it being automatic it could not be towed. Halfords then had Protyre carry out the work saying it was "free of charge" to us, but we had already paid Protyre for part of the work. Protyre had the car done in a day, but Halfords was taking forever to pay the invoice and in the end an employee of Halfords had to use their personal debit card to pay Protyre because we needed the car back and it had been 3 days since Halfords hadn't paid.

After threatening them with court, they have now said they would refund the service, but do you think it will be worth trying to get the £156 back as well?
Not to mention me and my wife are key workers and were without a car for week due to their negligence.

    Any advice is appreciated!!

Solicitors' letter to Halford may be a better option, seeing Halfords has already acknowledged its" shoddy workmanship by paying Protyre.
