  • Banned from a supermarket. What could happen next?

Hi everyone, I am so worried and would just like someone to talk to. I'm not sure if this is the write forum to post it in but i'm new and have seen that there has been a lot of good advice left on this site. I was banned from a supermarket last week for shoplifting. It was a massive and silly mistake that I should never ever have done and I regret my actions very dearly and I have learnt my lesson BIG TIME! It's all I can think about.

I was banned from a store in the UK a couple of days ago and am worried with what could happen next. When the incident occurred, I was escorted into a small room where I sat down, a security guard checked my bags and asked me if I had anything on me that I shouldn't of which I immediately said that I had a small piece of jewellery and handed it over. Whilst looking through my bags he asked if I had taken any make-up, jewellery or done receipt swapping, which I hadn't and I said no. He then asked for id which I handed over. He left the room and came back later and said I had two options; One to pay for the item and give a donation to charity, Another was that he called the police and I would get a big fine. I said for the first option, where I handed the money over and paid for the item and then gave some money to charity. I then left with the the paid for item having being told I would not get a fine from the police.

However, I have been looking on the internet and people have said that they have received a fine letter through the post for loss and damages a couple of weeks after the incident occurred and having been told by the security the guards that they would not be fined. Will this happen and when could I receive the letter? Also, I received no written confirmation that I am banned from the store. Should I have received one or could one be posted to me?

Also, with the security guard asking whether I had 'receipt swapped' anything. This got me thinking and I have just researched what this means. Originally I had gone into the store to do come food shopping and have a look round and return an item of clothing that I no longer wanted with the receipt. However, it got me thiinking that the item I returned seemed very cheap for what it was. When I originally purchased the item (from a different store) I can't remember the other tags of the same item of clothing being that price and I am now wondering, after having looked up what 'receipt swapping means' whether the tags have been mixed up and I purchased an item with the wrong tag on it. If this is the case to be found and I had no idea about it, could they prosecute further?

I regret very dearly and I am never going to go back into that store again and stay well clear of it. I fell so embarrassed and shameful and would appreciate any help.
    Thank you

    Hi:tongue2:

Some stores operate a civil Loss Recovery however as you paid for the goods albeit under coercion the store has suffered no loss. Sounds to me as though the store just applies 'summary justice' and having taken your punishment that should be that.
Look any claim for loss must be reasonable against you must be a reasonable loss incurred by the store. You paid for the item so any cost that could be asked for would be for the time taken out by the store in actually dealing with you.
If you should receive any correspondence DON'T PANIC! Come straight back and take it can be dealt with then. TBH I would imagine this to be done and dusted!
Please do learn from it. That way move on and put it behind you :tinysmile_twink_t2:

Thank you so much for your reply. It's nice to talk to someone. The address my id is registered to is my parents address where I do not live as I work away and I don't want them to find out about it as I will be so embarrassed and I don't want them to be disappointed in me. If I do receive a letter, will it be noticeable that it is a letter of this sort as I will not be able to interrupt the post if it is delivered to that address?

Not sure how you could intercept post, but you could ask your parents not to open anything addressed to you? It is none of their business after all?
