Dear all,
I'm a new member here and would very much appreciate your help.
I was today at a Superdrug store, and did some shopping. i was holding in my hand a hand cream along with my phone, wasn't sure whether i'd buy it or not. after wondering around in the store collecting stuff to buy, I headed off to the tills to pay, forgetting i was still holing the hand cream. i quickly paid and headed to the door, where the security guy and another guy stopped me for shoplifting. they took me at the back of the store where i explained to them i was only absent minded and didn't intend to take the cream -after all i ve just paid for my other stuff! i offered them to search my bag and pockets, where of course they found nothing, i apologised for this mistake and said again i was not shoplifting, i just forgot i was holding this with my phone ( i usually do hold my phone in my hands while shopping, so didn't feel weird). of course they were not believing me and were saying that everyone says the same.
i didn't have an y proof of id, only my driving license from my home country (not in english) and they requested an address. i wrote down my address and phone number and they requested to confirm the address, so i gave them the phone number of my flatmate , who confirmed on the telephone that i do live there.
the security guard returned to his position, while the other guy (store detective or something similar) wrote down my name phone and address to a paper, and a description of the incident, but they never gave me a copy of this paper. he told me that in 2 weeks i will receive a letter from his company, RLP, and with a fine (around 100GBP or so) that i'll have to pay within 21days. i told hiim again that this was a mistake but he said i should take it with them after the letter.
now, i've done some research in this and other forums and i'm seeing what is going on with RLP and other similar companies, and i am not intending to pay them anything or even answer to them, especially when this was a mistake. there's also something else, because he took my last name from my driver's license which was in another language he massively misspelled it, you can't tell it's even similar to mine. i saw it when he was writing it down on that form he filled. i didn't say anything of course.
all in all, no police was called, my surname is misspelled, they only have an address and a mobile phone number on me. of course that bloody cream i was holding, i left it to them so they ll probably sell it. i was banned from the store (don't care really).
my question is, if the letter arrives and my surname is still massively misspelled, if i ignore them and don't pay anything, would they be able to locate me and take me to court? would they have legal basis?
many thanks for your help guys!
