Hi, I hope I've come to the right place. I've received a letter from dwf (the first one). I resigned from the company they are 'representing' (food retail by the way). They are requesting me to pay a sum of money for an incident date of the day that was supposed to be my last day. However I ended up not working my last day or two because quite frankly I was over it and the working place. And it was a mutual decision between manager and I. I called, he said don't worry about finishing just hand in the keys when you can. So left it at that. So 4 weeks later, I receive this letter. Just wondering what the best option for me is in this regard. If dwf are stating the incident date as my last working day does this mean they just going on assumptions l. Should I request information or footage. Should I leave it. I'm a bit puzzled. If I need to post the letter, I will do. Never been in this position before.

Have DWF given details of the "incident"? It always helps to know the facts that you need to answer.
It may be sufficient for you to reply that there must be a mistake as you were not there. Or are they saying that the "incident" was caused or exacerbated by your absence.

It looks like just the standard first letter they send out. Saying they are acting on behalf of etc. Then the list starts and it says "stolen goods" or "value stolen". (I'll post a picture of the letter as soon as I get home. Shamefully, it happened a little while ago (I want to say May perhaps or early June) it was tough times and I regret it. Some weeks later I ended putting some back. But then couldn't again. Just feel stuck in a sticky situation. And I can't be sure of what they can see or prove. Unless I asked for this. But don't know what the next best step to do is.

Oh and as per the day of incident, I definitely wasn't there. There's no messages about it. Its just I rang in "sick" and my manager then said just not to worry coming in for the remainder of my notice. Which was like 2/3 days. So I didn't. No texts or anything.

So I received this letter last week. I was away so only got it on 16th July. As ashamed as I am to admit it. I did, but I cannot be certain it is the amount they are saying. I feel like it was less. I was trying to help someone as well as myself, this was in May or early June though. I also put some back a couple days later, I just felt riddled. But they're stating the 24th June. And I wasn't in business that day or for the week thereof. But I don't know if they just using that date as that was supposed to be my last day.

What exactly did you do back in May/June?
You mention " I was trying to help someone". Were they involved in the incident?
Initially I would write (post 1st class with free certificate of posting from PO) very briefly to DWF asking for full details of the incident to which they refer in their letter.
Do not mention the dates, the amount or anything else at this stage.

des8 a friend of mine was struggling and asked for help,I she had a newborn. And I felt bad that I couldn't help there and then so I did what I could at the time. Had endless sleepless nights about it so ended putting some money back when I got paid. Couldn't manage it all as was struggling myself. It never arose at work whilst I was there. And then when I left this came about. So should it just be a brief letter asking for details of the incident in letter dated (the date of their letter) to me and that's all?

You still haven't said what you did, but I assume you took goods without paying for them, although later you paid for some.
How did you manage to pay for those items later without raising suspicions?
Was it just once or twice or many times?
The aim is to discover exactly what they know, without giving them any details of what you actually did,nor reminding them that you weren't actually in the store on the date of the alleged incident.
So ask for details of the alleged incident, including a breakdown of the alleged items and valuation

des8 so sorry for the delay in replying, I thought I posted this last night. Luckily it let me restore it. I thought it was obvious with the heading. It was cash taken. Its hard writing it to be honest cause it makes me feel sick. I do regret it. I don't recall if it was late May or early June. And it was probably over a week, but small amounts, over each shift. It added up in the end but I don't think to what they've got. And then when I got paid, I put some back.

Confusion arose since you said "cash", but DWF referred to "goods".
Did you resign because your employer had discovered the shortages, or were they unaware of it until after you had left?
You do say " It never arose at work whilst I was there" so presumably your ex employer has not raised the matter with you at all?
