  • Hertz Rip Off Admin Fees.

Is this worth taking to court or am I just wasting my time?

I rented a car in June. All returned safe same day, no problems. 2 months later I receive a bus lane fine from my local council (Which i promptly pay) but I find an additional £42 taken out of my account by Hertz. I query this with the local branch. They advised that this is the "admin fee" for passing my details to the local authority. While I realise a small fee of £5 or something for this might be expected. £42 is just an excuse to take as much money as possible.

So I've written a complaint to Hertz complaints threatening court action. Recorded post and signed for but they have completely ignored it.

IS this worth taking through the small courts or am I just wasting my time?

Have a look at the T&Cs you signed. You may have a problem.

      Hertz terms here https://www.hertz.co.uk/rentacar/res...ES&EOAG=LGWT51

An administration fee of £ 42.00 (including tax) will apply per parking, traffic or congestion charge fine.
It is likely to be within your rental agreement.

It's not the highest by any means.

I know they charge £42 if they get sent a 'congestion charge' pcn after a hire car is returned, so maybe it's their set fee for other pcn's too??

The Penalty Charge Notice (PCN) will increase in cost depending on whether you pay with 14 days, 15 to 28 days and over 28 days. We will charge you an extra £42 administration fee, as well as the original penalty charge if we receive a late payment demand or have to pay on your behalf.

I knew it would be in the T&C's somewhere (probably to save them if the rentee does a disappearing act or something and they land up with the fine) but I am coming in from the angle that if I have paid the fine that this £42 is just an excuse for them to earn more money on the back of that. It surely doesn't cost them that much to fill in and post a form. I guess I should just cut my loses and not use them anymore.

I believe they also do this for Private Parking companies even though there is no legal requirement to pay if they follow the rules. Some hire compnies don't get it quite right in the T&Cs and so people do a chargeback.
