  • RLP ( Primark ) - Help!!!

    Hi
So I was caught with a few items that I had shoplifted from Primark ( Oxford Street) I know it's wrong and I am not particularly proud of it.

The security lady asked me to come into their security rooms downstairs. Emptied the bag and then asked me for the receipts which I obviously didn't have.

She then asked me for my name and any form of identification I had. I just had my cards at that time. But then she asked me for address proof. I had some online shopping showing my address.

My hands were literally shaking... I was stammering a bit because I was scared of what was going to happen. I don't want to hear a criminal record. I belong to a good family and have enough money.. God knows why did I have to do that..

Anyways they gave me unaddressed letter which just gave me the information about RLP and that they will be sending me a letter stating the fine amount.

I am extremely embarrassed and don't want my husband or anyone else for that matter to know about it.

    My questions are

    - how long till they send me the letter?
    - should I be contacting them or Primark to apologise and say that they didn't loose any item and got it all back in good condition and it didn't leave the showroom premises.
    - how much can the fine amount be? Is it related to the amount of the cost of items that were recovered?
    - if I decide to pay the fine and do it as soon as the letter comes in, will they still
Keep on sending me letters ?
    - is there an option of paying instalments?

This group has been helpful to many others.i am hoping to get some help and peace of mind.

    Thanks
    Sam

    Hi and welcome.

If you have read other posts from peeps in your situation, you will know that this site always advises people to ignore begging letters from RLP.
They will continue to send them for approx 9 months (it does vary slightly).
Eventually they arrange for threatening letters to be sent from a Debt Collector, and when those are ignored they offer a reduction, before giving up.
The amount demanded will probably be in the region of £150.

If you feel the pressure (and the letters do become more pressing) will be too much to bear, paying their initial demand will stop the flow.
    The choice is yours.

To be honest I feel extremely guilty for what I have done. I believe paying the fine will give me some peace with my own soul.

I am ready to pay the fine as soon as I get the letter from them.

Will the first letter be mentioning the amount to be paid?

      Thanks in advance

Remember that this is not a fine. It's what RLP think they can get away with.

The first letter will be full of legalese and will tell you how much they would like you to donate.

You are strongly urged to ignore it and subsequent letters.
The fact you have pangs of guilt feelings doesn't give them the right to levy charges.
In the UK we have a judicial system and it is not right that company should set themselves up as some sort of quasi legal vigilante group.
By paying them you help fund their subsequent attacks on other vulnerable people

Primark lost nothing, the staff were doing the jobs they are paid to do, so why should you pay any third party anything?
It is for Primark to take action via the civil courts to recoup any losses they think they have sustained.
They won't as they have lost nothing.

I agree Primark hasn't lost anything. And they got all their items in perfect state as they didn't leave the showroom premises.

Do you think me going to Primark and apologising to the security officer would help?

I am sorry I know my questions are sounding absolutely dumb but you see I am in a terrible state. I haven't been able to eat or sleep since yesterday. I am panicking thinking of the fact that if my husband comes to know of it.. It'll be disastrous.

I just want them off my back asap..

Please suggest what should I do?

Going to Primark will have no effect whatsoever.
They have passed the matter to RLP (who they employ) and so are rid of it.

If you were to confide in your husband, would he not support you?
Is he really such an ogre that you fear of him finding out about a very very minor incident?
You do not have a criminal record, will not appear in court nor the papers.
The police have not been involved.
There will be no effect on his standing in the public or family eye as no one else need know.

However if you really are so terrified (just what RLP want) then paying on receipt of their demand will PROBABLY stop their demands.

My husband is a very nice person, very honest and hardworking. And let's be honest it wasn't a mistake that I had all these items in my bag. As mentioned earlier we are financially very secure so there wasn't really a need to do that but I still did it.

Honestly I don't want to give in to their demands but If that's the cost of my peace of mind then so be it.. Very shallow I know.. But it's the truth..

They didn't ban me or anything.. They just said you can't shop anything today but can come tomorrow. I also offered to pay for everything that I had stolen but they didn't let me.

The lady who was talking to me was not nice but her supervisor was a good good guy.

                  Anyways what's the point..

How long does it take for the letter to come?

Sorry I am asking too many questions.. But this is the only place I am getting meaningful suggestions and honestly it has calmed me a bit.

                  Thank you so much!

I've read reports of first letter arriving anywhere between two weeks and three months.
Afraid you'll just have to sit it out.

I just hope you get over it soon and calm yourself down.
It is a very minor event and you shouldn't over worry about it.
Get on and enjoy the rest of your life.

Should I call or email them ?

That security officer told me to call them if I don't hear from them in 3 weeks time.

                      I am a bit confused.

I certainly would not contact them.
They may have lost your details ... why would you want to nudge them?

samantha, don't be so tetchy. The comment was not aimed at you it was at RLP.

Just ignore RLP, their letters do not warrant a reply, and neither do Primark. They are the ones that employ the RLP low life

The only reason the security officer want you to call him is to check that RLP are sending the letters out and they have the correct address, probably because he gets a little commission on the amount claimed.
