  • Faulty Goods - Can I get a refund?

    Hi all

After a messy and expensive divorce, I rented a flat and needed to purchase a new washer/dryer. I bought a new one from Brighthouse (please do not judge) This was May 2013. Since then, I have had problems with the dryer not working and also the spin cycle not working. In total, I have had 5 repairs on this machine. It broke down on 11th October 2015 and I called the store on 12th October to say enough was enough, I would like a replacement. My account is up to date and it had 5 star cover for replacement. They offered me one to 'borrow' until they could replace it, but that was on 15th, which I would have to wait in all do for. My replacement machine would be delivered on 19th October (again - all day wait) I said dont bother coming out on the 15th, just come out on the 19th. Item was deliverd, same model but massive dent in front, missing filter door from front, the dent was rusty indicating been sat for a while. The people who delivered it said do you want to keep your old one as its in better nick! I said its only cosmetic, install it and I will speak to the shop. One week is a long time to wait as it was.

A phone call to the store and was promised that they will replace it but could take a few weeks, I said fine, only cosmetic. Two hours later after doing a cycle, it leaked all over the floor! On top of that, the water inside it was stagenet and the kitchen absolutely stunk!

Phoned the store and said im not happy, needs to be sorted. Manager said I found another one from a different store, and its nearly new. Said fine, was delivered next day, with scratches on the front and side!

Told them still not happy as mine was looked after and looked brand new. Was told they will source another. First load and sounded like there was a rock inside it. When it did a spin I thought it was going to explode! the drawer for the detergent flew out and the washing machine rocked that much it came out of its hiding place!

Question is, I have paid around £10.00 per week since May 2013 and still have around a year left to pay. The purchase price was about £1000. They have just phoned and said they have another which they will deliver tomorrow. Question is, do I have to accept it, or can I ask for a part-refund? I do think I have give them ample time to sort the problem.

Could also mention that you are going to make a complaint to Trading Standards.

A complaint will follow I think. The staff seem to be trying to source the replacement, and doing it in a timely fashion. The issue seems to be, the 'like for like' replacements they offer. They source them from different stores, and are customers returns around the same age. Am I entitled to ask for a new machine as I am still paying for it?

Whilst all of the above are good options and the more civilised way about doing things if it was the first or second time but it sounds like you've clearly had issues from the start pretty much.

If it was me I wouldn't even bother and tell them to come and collect and get a refund on what you've paid already, to which your entitled to do and get another one - or they should be giving you a brand new one as you've bought it from new.
