  • Sold a car and now have threats of legal action against me!

I am a mechanic in a small local garage, I sold a car as a private sale in November last year to a lady for £950, When she came to pay for it and take it away her boyfriend turned down the offer of test driving it, also did not want a receipt.
After a week he phoned me saying there was a knocking noise from the front of the car so I told him to bring it back and I will have a look at it, I then fitted a ball joint, an anti roll bar link and fixed the heater blower which his friend broke when installing a CD player, I did all this work free of charge.
Today a recorded delivery letter arrived at my works threatening legal action against me if I don't pay her £195 for other work she says was needed to the car because the knocking noise was still there!!! she took the car to another garage and has given me a copy of a receipt for work on a car, the receipt has no address, no name, no vehicle details and no invoice number on it!
The question is should I just pay the woman to stop myself getting a CCJ or ignore her?:tinysmile_cry_t:

I might just add that at no point has there been any contact from her since I fixed the car back in November last year

The "receipt" is load of nonsense, keep it safe if this woman did attempt court action on the basis of that bit of paper she's got no chance.

      Ignore it!

If you're threatened in any other way inform the police!

        Thanks for the replies.

There was no warranty given with this car, its a 12 year old 90.000 mile megane!!! This woman doesn't even know my name or address just the place where I work.

          Agree with Nem.

But a little concerned you are a mechanic and sold a car from your employer's garage premises.
You said it was a "private" sale. If it was your family car possibly no probs, but viewing your trade some might regard you as a dealer, especially if you had bought it as a one off to sell on at a profit.
I'm not suggesting you are, but your situation is such that it could cause you problems.

This car was bought by myself to sell on at a small profit but was sold at the side of the road at my works, I generally do not buy and sell cars, this transaction was nothing to do with the garage where I work.
As I already fixed the car free of charge and then the woman decided to spend £195 without even consulting me I feel is wrong

In the clear Barney, the woman is a chancer probably being encouraged by the boyfriend or whatever he was.
It is wrong and it's going no where!
