  • Halfords cycle to work problem

I have been in dispute with Halfords over a cycle purchased on the cycle to work scheme. 10 months ago I obtained a Halfords own brand cycle through my employer - I began actually using it in April this year.

The quality was terrible and after numerous issues I raised a complaint which escalated to the CEO's office. The complaint was not resolved and I looked towards Moneyclaim online - suddenley Halfords realised I had the cycle through the scheme and their attitude changed. They cut off all communication with a final email stating that I only rented the bike through my employer. I had no rights as owner and basically any claim would be invalid and the matter was now closed.

They have not responed to any futher emails I have sent them.

Any advice? (apart from not to buy cycles from Halfords!)

    Hi & welcome
It would seem that Halfords are correct in that the supply agreement is between Halfords and your employer.
Deductions made from yoursalary are in return for a noncash benefit (the Bike)
Effectively you are paying for he bike, but in a tax efficent way, but in a way in which you may never become the owner!
Legally though it is your employer who is supplying you with the bike, and any complaints should be taken up with them.

Have you approached your employer about your problems?
As presumably other members of the company have joined this scheme and obtained bikes through the employer from Halfords, halfords might well be more receptive to a complaint from your employer.

As a matter of interest, how long is the hire term, and who is financing it, the employer or a bank/finance company?

Thanks. The hire ends in November. I will ask my employer re the finance. The shocking bit was the Halfords reacted when they found I was on the scheme.

When the hire ends, the employer can sell the bike to you, but it has to be at market value.
If it is as poor as you say I would suggest offering your employer 1p if he doesn't manage to resolve your complaint.

Halfords have always treated their customers and their staff very badly. Many years ago when all shops closed on Christmas day and Boxing day and added another day if either was a Sunday, Halfords were the only shop in town that were opened and they were known as 'Grabber Halfords'.
