Question Regarding Workplace Bullying and Social Media Privacy

Hi,

Firstly apologies If this is in the incorrect forum, I can move if so required.


Anyway this basically involves workplace bullying and here is a brief overview.

A person following me on Social Media took a screenshot of a message that I posted and sent it to every person with the organisation and without my consent. The message was posted to my followers and makes no reference to any actual third party by name. In fact the message is targeted for a couple of family members who we are at loggerheads with. The person in question - whom is now deleted, has emailed/sent this message to every member to turn all recipients against me. What legal action or other can I take?

One thing people seem to forget is the fact that everything you write online can be preserved for posterity. Even if you delete your posts after just a few minutes, someone may have screen printed them hoto: and they could be filed and passed round for years to come. There's no easy way to stop them.

Another thing to bear in mind is that if you use the company email system, even if you delete your emails, they could easily be restored by IT.

Something I always remember is, "The only way to ensure something you put online isn't seen or copied is not to put it there."

IE - only put up what you're happy for anyone to see. Many people copy even totally innocuous content for reasons only known to themselves. Equally, one post in haste can come back and haunt you way down the line. I think you may have learned a useful, and hopefully not too painful lesson.

Indeed, and it's also worth remembering that communications you think are private may not always be, for various reasons, a few examples are:

• If you use the company email system or any other proprietary system such as private messaging, your communications can be read by IT or those who have access to the back end. That's happened to me a couple of times :rant: :rant: :rant: and, in the past, was used to get myself and others, sacked - 11 years ago, so this isn't exactly new.
• If you send someone an email or private message, that person could forward it to someone else who in turn could do the same, so be careful what you write and who you send it to.
• Online 'chats', including those via FB can be screen printed and shared by the other party. They may be your friends today but you never know what tomorrow may bring.

If the content is innocuous, it shouldn't be an issue if someone decides to copy it. Also it's not what people have saved on their computer/memory stick/external HD/cloud storage :nerd: but what they do with it.

Absolutely! Once it gets screen printed, it will be preserved forever.

Yes, mine has lain dormant for a good couple of months now. I keep having friends contact me as they're worried about me. I haven't worked out how to delete the account yet, I'll have to Google it when I get a moment.

Exactly why i have closed my FB account. There are too many trouble makers around and my job means more to me that posting crap.

I've had a FB account since 2008 and have never posted any crap, nor has anyone else been allowed to do so. So many people slag off FB for various reasons when in fact, it's like anything else, it all depends on how you use it. With me, it's been very useful to get in touch with long lost friends and family, and I've made quite a few trips thanks to FB, including one a long way away.

I don't post very much on FB, keep it mostly as an online business card. I find those who feel the need to post everything they do, think or feel are the ones more likely to experience FB related trouble. I can't see how FB can affect your job unless you post stuff about work on there, which is very unwise, or post something like: "I'm doing a sickie on the beach today". :tinysmile_kiss_t4:

For me i posted that i had bollocked two members of staff for arsing about during the 2 minute silence. That got me a written warning. And after that i decided i wouldnt use it anymore.

I learned my lesson in pre-FB days, when I got sacked over posting things online, in 2003. Nothing major, but I was working in the F $ector. :rant: :rant:

ive learnt my lesson alright. Tbh i didnt even consider what id said to be all that bad. But yeah in hindsight it wasnt my brightest moment
