  • Can a Car Garage MOT The Vehicles It Is Selling

    Hi,

Just wondering is it allowed for a Garage to MOT their own cars they are selling?

Can find any info about it at all. I would have personally though that you can't due to a personal interest. But, from what I have learned over the last few weeks about car dealers, they can do what they want when selling cars. and it's up to the buyer if they can, to prove the seller is in the wrong which is nigh on impossible as we have found out.

If the fault with the motor car is something minor or trivial, such as a broken or missing screen-wash bottle, you don't really have much cause for complaint.

If the fault is more serious, such as faulty brakes being passed as OK, a bent track rod being overlooked or the door sills being composed of rust, newspaper, chicken wire and ticky-tacky body filler, then take it up with Trading Standards and VOSA. (link)

      In short, yes they can.

I was an MOT tester for 8 years and used to treat each car no matter what age, condition, owner the same. As long as they apply the same standards to each inspection and carry out quality control checks there is no reason why they should not be allowed to.

If you have a specific dispute over a car that has passed it's MOT when you believe it shouldn't have, post it up and I can advise further. As CC says, it all depends on what the fault is and the time gap from when the MOT was carried out.
Any opinions I give are my own. Any advice I give is without liability. If you are unsure, please seek qualified legal advice.
