  • Local Councils Policy

I went to my local council today to enquire about taking my name off the tenancy.
As some of you may know, I'm seperated from my ex and looking for housing and a job. Not a lot of luck in either search.
I'm on the register for housing with local council and housing association.
Currently in council housing so for me to be considered for any housing I've got to take my name off the current tenancy.
So.....what happened, they told me if I take my name off the tenancy, I'm intentionally making myself homeless so no urgency will be placed on allocating me a house. If I remain on the tenancy, no urgency will be placed on allocating me a house.
mmmmmmmmmmmm not only that, If I take my name off the tenancy, the whole tenancy agreement will have to be terminated for all parties and the ex (even though 3 young children are involved) will have re-apply for housing with no guarantee that the current property will be allocated.

    How crap is that.

Any advice or experience posted will be of great help.

    thanks.

I would consult Citizens Advice about that because the council cannot surely make you homeless or your ex because you have split up, regardless of whether you ARE or ARE NOT on the housing list. It makes you still liable for any council rent arrears even though you do not live there anymore. That is complete and utter nonsense.

tell me about it.... it's a farce.
They say that it's not the council that is making me homeless, I have a roof over my head and it's my choice to leave it.
I asked if they are endorsing an unhappy environment for the children, needless to say they said it was my choice.
