  • Computer repair shop ripping me off ??

Hello to everyone in here , hi there . My name is jim and I'm living in limerick southern Ireland.

I took my daughters computer into a repair shop on thursday 12 sept 2013, i asked them do they fix and repair computers. The woman said "yes, if you leave your laptop here you need to pay 20 euros, for our technician to look at it. We will then call you to tell you what is wrong, how it can be fixed and how much it will cost." she also said to me that "no work will be carried out until we call you . I thought well thats ok , no work until I'm called. Good ,good ,sounds alright to me. she then said to me " its thursday, so we will call you, probably tomorrow evening, if thats ok?" I said fine thank you and left the shop.

I had no call on friday, and recieved a call at 14.09 sat 14 sept, "hello its crystal clear here, its about your computer. its fixed. ready to be picked up. and ......... you have paid 20 euros already and the work was 40 . You can come anytime for it " i said " WHAT?? I THOUGHT YOU SAID YOU WOULD RING ME ABOUT ANY MORE COSTS " "Oh im sorry , im sorry for the misunderstanding, but its fixed we had to do this ,do that, and reinstall this, and all together it comes to 60..

I went straight to the shop with my receipt regarding the 20 i paid for them to look at it, and asked for my computer back. I told them that i was "not paying anything to them as i was not informed about anymore costs." " You had no right to do work without my expressed permission." This chap then started getting all shirty, "well if you don't pay the balance your not having your computer back " so i called the police.. now before i say what happend. where do i stand at this point in time ?? I thank you anyone for your input jim

Computer repair shop ripping me off ??

Hi i went into a shop on Thurs 12 sept. with a laptop. asked if they repair them ? "Yes , if you leave a deposit of 20 , we will have our technician look at it , find the problem. and call you to tell you what the cost will be, no work will be done until you are told about it " OK i thought cool. well i had a call today 14th about 2pm "hello your computers fixed, we did this, did that, reinstalled this ,messed with that, and its 60, but you have paid 20 so you owe us 40 . You can collect it when Evers good for you" . i told her that I'm not paying anything and I'm coming for my computer.

i went for my computer and had a run in with some guy there who was getting shirty. which really got me going now !!! told him he had no right to repair anything without my express permission, and i wanted my property back, he refused to give it me until i paid the balance. so i called the police. who said they carnt get involved it would be a civil matter. i said he has no right to keep my computer to ransom for work carried out that i never authorised. Whats the story with this ???? where do i stand

Hi, and welcome to our overseas member!
Contentious matter in the UK. However here you can ask for the repairs to be undone. On the other hand, as goods have been improved, the repairer is entitled to retain them until payment has been made! (or so I understand and wait to be corrected by others more knowledgeable)
I am advised the relevant European Parliament directive is 2005/29/EC.

      Good luck.

Thanks des8, I'm still quite upset about it. and i don't want people to think I'm a miser or anything. It was just that they said they would contact me to tell me what was to be done, (how much ) and no work would be done until i say so. What would i have done if it was 140 ?? , Don't i have the right to wether or not i have it fixed ?? i spoke to a computer guy (pc world ) he said to me " when they ring you top tell you what is the problem" , "come to me with the laptop and i will give it a quick look " for nothing i might be able to fix it for you for nowt
that was what i was going to do. until it was taken out of my hands

Appreciate how you feel about the matter, and I can see you would think it unfair. However the law doesn't work on unfairness but on illegality.
In a dispute like this in the UK one would generally "pay under protest" and then pursue a claim for reimbursement. However the claimant should bear in mind it is normally his word against the defendants that repairs weren't authorised, the cost of claiming and the stress of it all. Generally speaking it's probably not worth pursuing.

I agree it is probably not worth your while pursuing the matter. I understand your frustration and half the garages in the UK would be closed down if they behaved as this computer shop did towards you. However, it also, rather sadly, reinforces the old adage, everything in writing for the avoidance of doubt.

I'd chalk it up to experience and move on. FWIW, our local computer shop charges £40 to look at it. It may come back working, or they may phone saying more work is needed. :beagle:

i did infact call the police to the shop to demand my pc back, and he refused , so the police are a witness to my complaint it is not my word against his, as well as me recording my conversation with him when i was making my first contact with him.

TO BE FAIR, WORKING IN it MYSELF, 90% OF REPAIRS ARE A SUCK IT AND SEE PROCESS, WITHOUT KNOWING THE (sorry fro caps) exact problem in the first place its difficult to say.

but to be fair though im presuming in total 80 euros for a reinstall does seem a little excessive.

                              just my two penneth mate.

but i work on no fix no fee basis and always give a general cost up front.

its a difficult one mate, sometimes you can work a few hours on a machine just to find that something major is goosed and its then uneconomical to repair.....
