Re: Travel Insurance claim declined. Insure and Go

Having looked at the policy wordings (thanks ostell) I wonder if they ever pay out on claims.
IMO it's a great example of how to write a policy that gives no cover!
They don't even have to rely on "known events" to avoid this one:
Quote: "Special exclusions apply to Section A (cancelling...your holidays)
We will not cover the following No 11.......strikes......"

It might be possible to get a payout on this by showing the promotional blurb talks the cover up in an unfair manner. If in large print it says things like "travel with security" without indicating there are any substantial restrictions, and you were not offered a copy of the policy until AFTER the policy was purchased and so could not check it, it can be argued the insurers cannot rely on the small print to avoid the promises of the large print. Did it once for a daughter who (against advice) bought a "cheap" motor insurance.

They do various different policies - best check exactly which one it is.

True Charitynjw, but that "special Exclusion" for "cancellation" claims is in all four policy wordings. But it may be helpful to see that validation certificate.

On reflection as the insurers are declining the claim on the grounds of "known event" my advice is still to go back to them and ask them to show why they regard it as known, i.e. where was the news published in the public domain so that the ordinary man in the street would have cognizance of the fact.
It depends on their answer as to how to continue the claim.

We were recommended to Insure and Go recently but have not and will not take up a travel policy with them. They have a duty of care to tell you when you insure what is covered and what is not covered so they may have misrepresented themselves by not explaining all the facts regarding this insurance. They would have a voice recording of the phone call which you could request if that is possible.

My friend got a response from the claim handling company saying they were looking into the claim again.

It was suggested to them that they had been lax in accepting the insurance premium if they had known at the time there would be a strike. If they had not known then why was there a problem in paying out.

"claim handling company" say no more. They aren't insurers, just tick box merchants. The DCAs of the insurance world!

Well a partial success. My friend has received a cheque from the insurers. Not the full amount but she is happy about the sum paid. I'll post the full details when I speak to her next.

Thanks for some of the suggestions put forward.
