  • Need advice on issue with price tag swapping

I was in a garden shop yesterday with my son and a security guard and another employee approached me and said a member of the public saw my son changing a discounted plan label to a cheaper price.

They checked their CCTV and said they have proof, they asked if I would give them my details but said I was not going to do this as I have been told its best to say nothing. They said that this is fine but would be passing the details to the police and we are banned from the shop, and we walked out.

My son is 14 years old and is registered with autism and learning difficulties, they said the item was £30 and he put a £1 label on it but don’t have any evidence and did not see him do it if they are correct. I buy lots of plants from the shop and spend a few hundred pounds a month as it calms my son and makes him happy so don’t look at the price labels when it comes to pay.

What are my rights, am I liable as the parent, and what issues could my son face? Was I right to walk out and not give any details?

    Thanks

    Hi Cantercrow

    Welcome to LB

You could simply write to the store and explain as you have 'here'.
Even if he had done that, it was done innocently through his own 'actions'
which sometimes are difficult to control because of his 'autism'.

Nothing was taken, it is very unlikely anything will happen.
There is no loss, the police have more important matters.

Hi, thank you for the advice, something was taken a plant that I was told I paid £1 for and should have been £30, also this is in the UK if that changes things?

      Thanks

O.K. so the payment / purchase / take home for £1 (should have been £30) happened on a previous visit and you were informed about this on a follow up visit, is this correct?

Yes this is correct they spoke to me when I went in the shop on another day, I am worried that this will effect my sons future career but as he is only 14 is this in his favour? also would I be prosecuted for it as they may say I know about it which I did not if it was true.

I have been worrying about this for days and worried the police will turn up at my door.

          Thanks

Didn't you say you walked out without giving them your name and address? So how would the police know who you are or where to find you?

                It isn't going to happen.

                No it won't.

There are 'mitigating' factors stated in your posts.
