Hi - this is a bit of an unusual one but it would seem my partner has been treated very unfairly and I just wondered if anyone had any advice - legal or otherwise.
My partner manages a pub then has very recently come on the market for lease and has worked there for 4 years, he's been in the pub trade all of his life having grown up in a pub, he's 29 (his age appears to be significant).
The existing tenants, when giving in their notice requested that it not be put on the market for a week while they notified my partner as they're very aware of how much he would like to lease the pub, has been preparing for it for a long time. Of course, they advertised the pub immediately anyway (Friday AM). My partner contacted the Brewery first thing the following Monday and was past from pillar to post. He finally got through to someone who said they already had someone interested and viewing the pub on Tuesday - he wasn't told anything else, a meeting wasn't scheduled to discuss his experience and financial status to take on the pub, he was just told to call back the following Friday if he hadn't heard from anyone. He tried again on the Thursday and Friday to get in touch without success. He was then told this morning that the pub had been offered to the first person that viewed it. It's since been highlighted that the recruitment manager for the area had said "he seems a bit young to run a pub" - so I assume that's it, at that point they had made their mind up and wouldn't consider him at all.
I know its a case of first come first serve, but how he's been treated is so underhand and to discriminate against his age is awful. Is this just the pub trade and how brewers work?
