  • Excessive gas bill

    Hi
    quick outline:
family member owns and lives in 1 bed flat
the energy company have sent a 6k gas bill
this has been questioned and company have been told it would be impossible for a well-insulated 1 bed flat to use that amount, even if heating was on 24/7.
company insist bill is paid and are threatening to cut gas
company have been offered £100 per month, as that’s all that is affordable. They refused, insisting of three £2k instalments

question: can they cut gas and refuse to accept payment offer? Also, can they just ignore questions about excessive amount?
    thanks

You don't say what period it's for, a year, 2 years?

Have you lodged an official complaint? The details will be on their website, collection activity should stop whilst they investigate.

    Back billing might apply -

If the energy company is at fault, you can complain to the Services Ombudsman, if you receive a deadlock / final response letter.

Send the company a Subject Access Request, they have 30 days to respond -

It could be a faulty meter.

    We really need more information.

They can cut you off, but there is a process, they have to tell you before hand.
