Are rail/ train companies legally obliged to get you home that night

On Saturday the 8th of October I need to go by train from Manchester to London via Crewe very early in the morning and I need to return the same last thing at night. There are currently railway strikes happening on that day!

I have spoken to national rail and they tell me that there is no cancelled trains as of yet. But when I went to the train station today the staff said the likely hod is that most staff except the train drivers will be on strike and that only trains will run though the time time 9-5ish will only operate and I could be stranded in London over night!

Question; last year I remember missing the last train from Crewe to Manchester because the London to Crewe train was delayed. The train manager said that some kind of law (dont remember what he said) makes the train companies obliged to pay for and provide transport to there destination if they have missed the last train at night by fault of the train company and they have a train ticket. So they booked me and a few others a taxi from the station to our destinations.

Dose any one have any more info on this one please?

check out National Express and other bus services. Reaching for a possible legal remedy is not a best first step.

I would think that if strike action is prenotified and you are told that there will be disruptions there will be no help if you choose to travel. In the previous example there was an unexpected delay. I would find an alternative route and get a refund of the ticket or go the night before and stay over.
