I had a warning light come on my car indicating that there was a failure to the power steering (which there was), and I took it into a BMW main dealer for a diagnosis and repair. They confirmed that the problem was with the speed sensor which they changed at a cost of £1100. However, when I collected the car it was apparent that the problem was still there - the power steering still wasn't working and the warning light was still present. They agreed to take it back in and check. A second diagnosis was made of a faulty control unit, this was going to cost £850 + VAT + labour cost so I told them not to do this. We had a conversation about misdiagnosis and using due skill (following a call to the consumer helpline) and they agreed to do some more work. 2 months later they weren't able to fix it so returned it to me. When I collected the car they said they were going to give some money back for the unnecessary work on the speed sensor but have now changed their mind. Is there any basis for taking this forwards to get some money back?

My opinion is all money should be paid back, Nothing is repaired so what have you paid for ?. Try and recover the car and get an Independent to check it with a Diagnostic. At least you will know for sure what caused the problem, try and remember that there are no Mechanics now, only plug-in meter to check it that is telling them the problem, its change the part and hope they got it right,

Write back to them and tell them that as they failed to diagnose or repair your vehicle to a satisfactorily they were in breach of Consumer Rights act 2015 sec 49 & 52 and therefore you are seeking a price reduction in accordance with sec 52.(1) & (2)
suggest you read at least those sections of the Act (https://www.legislation.gov.uk/ukpga...ion/56/enacted)
At this stage I would not threaten court, but if they turn you down, you then tell them you are off to court.
