  • Garage charging for work not carried out

I had a fault on my car (engine light) and took to a garage local to work (which is 120 miles from home as I work away in the week).

they diagnosed the warning as a fault in the manifold and said they wouldn’t be able to do it for a few weeks as there was a long lead time on spares. They did advise me it was safe to drive - that I would just experience some reduction in performance - and that they would call when they could fit it in.

my car subsequently failed about a week later whilst I was at home so, unable to drive it any considerable distance, I booked it in to a local garage for repair and rang the original garage stating it had failed and I wanted to cancel the appointment (they hadn’t contacted me at this stage to book it in on a set date). They responded that they would cancel the appointment but I would have to pay for the parts they had on order (£773).

I shrugged that off saying I wouldn’t pay as the car failed owing to thier neglect (said it was for to drive). I then received no stop phone calls telling me to pay, then threats of legal action, to the point where it has stresses me out so much that I am at the point of just paying for the parts I have not received (they said they will courier them when I pay).

Unsure what to do - please help
