Hi, my son bought a car today. All documentation stated 40k miles. He drove 30 miles home and once the on screen menu came up it should 76k miles.Whilst at the car dealer he changed his insurance and incurred £260 cancellation fee also filled the car with petrol.* They have advised we return the car tomorrow, a futher 60 miles round trip, to investigate the matter. I fully expect them to refund the cost of the car but where do we stand regarding the additional costs he's occurred. we also spent 4 hours there and time off work will need to be taken tomorrow. Thanks for any advice.**

Is he otherwise satisfied with the car?
How much was paid?
How paid? Cash/ credit card/HP?
Basically he can reject the car and claim damages and a full refund, or he could negotiate a price reduction?
If he rejects the car it is for the dealer to arrange collection at his (the dealer's) cost

Hi DE58, thank you for your reply. He likes the car but doesn't want it due to the mileage. He paid half through debit card and half through credit card. The price was £8995, he'd saved hard to afford that at 19 to his credit, he's gutted and worried he's lost money due to this. So do you think he'll get the aditional cost back? He agreed to sell his car to an interested party as soon as he'd bought it to add to his stress, he now has no car to get him to work.*

Is the mileage displayed on the mot certificates and service history ? Did he do an HPI check ?
Is the only place it is different on the instrument panel ? Has he checked he's not looking at the trip computer rather than the overall mileage ( it happens)#staysafestayhome

He does still have it but reluctant to let the purchaser down as they travelled a fair distance to view it.His insurance cancellation fee included £160 to cancel his black box and have a new one fitted.* Hoping it can be stopped due to their cooling off period.*

Is there anything else* behind this, please?
Not many people buy and sell a car the same day.
Your son saves up to buy a car which he likes.
It turns out there is*a problem with the advertised mileage, although all other records are correct
Within hours he arranges to sell it to someone who lives some distance away.
Most people would have raised the matter of the mileage discrepancy with the dealer prior to selling the vehicle immediately.
This is a problem that will be raised if it ever reaches court
