A comprehensive pack of information to help MPs’ constituents with financial issues is on its way to all UK MPs, regional assembly members and MEPs courtesy of leading financial trade associations.
A Guide to Personal Finance, created by the coalition of trade associations known as the Financial Fringe, contains essential information and tips on the financial topics found most often in MPs’ postbags.
The pack is designed to equip MPs and other representatives with useful information to pass on to their constituents looking for guidance on financial issues. It includes easy to understand factsheets and comprehensive lists of organisations who may be able to help individuals needing guidance or further information.
It has been produced following consultation with MPs on the questions their constituents most often ask and covers 25 subjects from investments to credit products. It is also available directly to the public through the websites of all of the trade associations.
Mark Lazarowicz MP, chairman of the All-Party Group on Debt and Personal Finance, and John Greenway MP, chairman of the All-Party Group on Insurance and Financial Services, write in the foreword:
“Competition gives consumers an opportunity to select appropriate products – but it is very important to ensure that they understand how these work and where to go if they need help … We hope this guide will help consumers make the right financial choices to enable them to plan for and protect their futures.”
Note to editors
The eight Financial Fringe members are: the Association of British Insurers (ABI); Association of Independent Financial Advisers (AIFA); APACS, the UK payments association; British Bankers’ Association (BBA); Building Societies Association (BSA); Finance and Leasing Association (FLA); Investment Management Association (IMA); and the Tax Incentivised Savings Association (TISA).
Foreword
Financial services are at the heart of a modern society. Consumers now have a greater choice of products than ever before, ranging from mortgages to personal credit and pensions. Competition gives consumers an opportunity to select appropriate products – but it is very important to ensure that they understand how these work and where to go if they need help. This is where financial education has a vital role to play.
Financial issues rate high in MPs' postbags. This guide, which is aimed at MPs, Councillors and members of the devolved Parliaments and Assemblies, is intended to be used as an information tool in constituency offices. It provides guidance on the wide range of financial products and issues experienced by consumers in their everyday lives.
We welcome the innovative approach taken by the leading financial services trade bodies in producing the guide and hope that you find it useful. We also offer our thanks to Citizens Advice for their input.
We hope this guide will help consumers make the right financial choices to enable them to plan for and protect their futures.
