  • Tax credits overpayment

Hello and thank you for adding me to your forum. I am a newbie on here and wish to get some advice on tax credits overpayment.
I made a mistake on my tax credit form in 2011/2012, I was in between jobs and was ill at the time I made this tax credits renewal. I was suffering from extreme stress, I had been through a long child custody battle from my absent ex who wanted custody of our child, the whole case lasted initially 2 years in court but his solicitor kept bringing me back to court up until May 2010 even though her client my ex decided to remove his application and he paid no child maintenance up until 2011. I started a new job in 2011 and throughout that was bullied, in the words of the operational manager I didn't "fit in" ! Throughout this year with these people, I began suffering severe headaches, crying etc just generally emotionally breaking down. And this is when I made my mistake with the tax credits so when the overpayment came to light, I sent them evidence that I was ill and even though HMRC removed the penalty, I still needed to pay back the overpayment which I did and was paying back monthly but had to stop as I became ill again this time I needed surgery which happened in January 2015 but had to stop payments as I was in financial hardship. I was told that I couldn't claim income support but could claim statutory sick pay last year which I did until I started my new job in April 2015. I've appealed the tax credit overpayments to HMRC and the payments seem to grow from £2,550 to short of £,5000 so far dealing with HMRC is a waste of time and I wondered why the debt is growing. I've asked them outright if they are applying interest on the original debt but have had no reply from HMRC. Is it too late to complain to the Parliamentary Ombudsman. Any advice would be appreciated.
