refrigerator van hire problem with hire company

Hi guys, hope that some body can help. I recently hired a refrigerator van as I was doing the buffet for my daughters wedding. I drove the van to the venue the night before and plugged it in ready for use the next day. When I arrived the next morning the temperature was far to high for food storage 14 centigrade, the compressor was working but it wasn't chilling. Because of this we couldn't use it. I told the hire company when I got back and was told they would contact me by phone to discuss the issue. They never phoned so I had to ring them, this happened twice. Eventually they told me to ring the boss at head office which I did. He said leave it with him and he would ring me back that day which was yesterday, he didn't. I rang again today to be told by his secretary that he was in a meeting and that she would get him to ring me later today, he didn't! I feel that I am getting nowhere with this approach can anybody please advise as to what my next move should be? The van was hired to me but wasn't fit for purpose luckily I have a catering background so realised the problem straight away somebody else may hire it and end up giving people food poisoning.
