    Good afternoon, my first post.
i have been paying off a long term debt with Cabot (originally a Lloyds debt) of £11,000 at £10 per month for approximately 8 years, I have now received a letter from Cabot saying that I will be getting a visit from “orbit”, a specialist debt agency, should I be concerned, do they have any power ?

Orbit is a subsidiary of Cabot and part of the same group of companies although you wouldn't know it from either of their websites. So it's just being passed to another part of Cabot. I suspect Orbit will be pressuring you to increase your monthly payment.

They're just a debt collector, the same as Cabot. They don't have any special powers.

Did you get taken to court over the original debt and get a CCJ issued against you? Or is your £10/month a voluntary agreement?

If you weren't taken to court before only the debt owner could take you to court. Do you know if Lloyds still own it or did they assign it to Cabot? If Cabot own it the could in turn assign it to Orbit.

You could write to Cabot and tell them you will only deal with Orbit in writing and you do not want any visits from Orbit. Never speak to debt collectors by phone, always in writing. Orbit may ignore it and call anyway.
All opinions expressed are based on my personal experience. I am not a lawyer and do not hold any legal qualifications.

Thank you, the original debt was with Lloyds and it was a £10 voluntary arrangement for which I was never taken to court and no CCJ was ever issued, as far as I’m aware Cabot now owns the debt and have done for many years

        What was the debt for?

You could send them a CCA request, see what they send back. Make sure you get Proof of Postage.

        https://legalbeagles.info/library/gu...etter-example/

All you need to do is fill in an Income and Expenditure form, send that to Cabot, take into account the 'cost of living', i.e. energy, food etc.

Give yourself a 'buffer', just in case things continue to increase.

If you are left with £1, each month, then so be it. This is a non-priority debt, the Court would only ask you to pay what you can afford each month.

Amend the letter, so that it reflects your circumstances, attach the I & E form make sure you get Proof of Postage.

        This should stop Orbit's activities.
