Hello, thank you for viewing my question.
Im still being charged non domestic rates from a property I left in june 2017, i had small business rates relief on this property up until April 2018. I gave my landlord written notification that I intended to vacate the property via personally posting a letter trough his office door . I also moved house from that town to another.
Fast forward .
I discovered i have had a large sum arrested from my account by a sheriff officer. I have so far discovered there is also another large sum to be arrested in the next few weeks . Its unpaid non domestic rates from 2018 until present .
I am being charged for rates on a property I have had nothing to do with from 2017. They have been sending correspondence to my previous address however the council knew i had moved away. But continued to send there demands to that address. They also sent correspondence to the property I was previously renting , but the landlord has not been taking any notice of it.
I have never received any correspondence to my address i had moved too and I only discovered this had happened as large amount had left my bank account.
Do I have any legal rights , i really dont know what to do.
I have sent them my contract that expired in 2015 and was never renewed (I'm led to believe scots law states a legally binding contract rolls on if it hasnt been renewed) But i continued to remain there and pay rent up until 1 month after i had left. I also sent them a copy of the letter i had on file that i sent the landlord. Is this enough or am i fighting a lost cost.
North lanarkshire council , non domestic rates department representative i spoke to on the phone was very abrupt and rude on the phone and she didn't have very good people skills .
I have never had debt or missed a payment for anything in my life, but feel this is going to cause me some problems in the future.
