  • Housing benefit overpayment need help

Hi I started getting money taken from my wages from my local council found out that it was from a housing benefit overpayment from 2007 obviously being so long ago had no clue and believed this will be stautered barred. Well I phoned them around jan 20th and told them all this they then rang me back and said yes it's an historic debt and it will be written off. They sent a letter to my employer saying they have written off and to cancel said debt. Well today get a phone call from the council "out of courtesy" their words that this is no longer written off as the person who dealt with it didnt know what they were doing and that this isnt statued barred and they will be getting an attachment of earnings again.
Can they write off a debt but then say oh no we now want?
    any help would be good*
