Hi,
just to give some background I have started a degree apprenticeship recently and it's not completely what I expected and I'm not really liking it at the moment. In saying this I have only been there for a fairly short amount of time so I want to give it a go and stick it out for longer to see if I change my mind. However, in the near future if I feel the same and I do want to want to leave I'm a bit unsure of the consequences in terms of paying back training costs, which is making me a bit worried. Within my contract it says that if I voluntarily leave within the duration of the course (4 years) + 6 months afterwards I would be liable to pay back 100% of training costs.
Indeed, It also says that anything the government apprenticeship levy covers I do not have to pay back and I asked someone within the company if my degree course is funded by the levy and they said yes, which I think means i won't be liable to pay back the degree course for the year. But I'm a bit unsure of what the training costs could be and how much? I understand travel to the course may be a cost they can charge me for but can they charge you back for apprenticeship learning/ on the job training that you're getting paid a salary for? I'm a bit unsure of what they can charge me to pay back. It also says that in any occasion that I leave within this time period the costs will be deducted from my salary and if it's a bigger amount, then I will have like a month to pay this cost back. I understand it's fair enough for a business to charge me back for some training costs as I am using their resources but overall I'm not 100% on what these will be and any guidance on this would be much appreciated just in case this does happen and I can be a bit prepared.
