A memorial service has been held for Sir Nicholas Winton, who rescued hundreds of children from the Holocaust in the months before World War Two.

Although this man had reached a great age I was very sad last July when I heard the news that he had died. What he did was extraordinary but what is seldom mentioned is the resistance there was to taking these Children into this country. I am sorry but a great many people did not want an ‘infestation’ of foreigners. Ireland was worse. They actually gave more Nazis sanctuary after the war than refugees during it.
Any of this sound familiar? Do we really want our grandchildren to have to airbrush our history when they recall what happened when refugees asked for a safe haven? How do we want to be remembered? As de Valeras or Wintons?
There are migrants and there are refugees. Let’s be absolutely sure we know the difference before we decide.

An optimist is someone who falls off the Empire State Building, and after 50 floors says, 'So far so good'!
