  • Mortgage and landlord possession actions decrease

    Ministry of Justice (MoJ) publishes statistics on mortgage and landlord possession actions for the first quarter of 2010
    New figures published by the MoJ show a reduction in mortgage and landlord possession actions over the first quarter of this year. The report breaks down the numbers of mortgage and landlord possession claims issued and claims leading to orders provided by local authorities, as well as by county courts.
    Amongst findings, the report shows:
    • 18,504 mortgage possession claims were issued 24% lower than in the first quarter of 2009 and 8% lower than in the fourth quarter of 2009;
    • 14,373 mortgage possession claims led to orders being made15% lower than in the first quarter of 2009 and 13% lower than in the fourth quarter of 2009;
    • 33,180 landlord possession claims were issued 6% lower than in the first quarter of 2009 and no change from that in the fourth quarter of 2009; and
    • 21,691 landlord possession claims led to orders being made 9% lower than in the first quarter of 2009 and 3% lower than in the fourth quarter of 2009.

    Mortgage possessions statistics should be viewed with caution, as there would have been a reduction following the introduction of the Mortgage Pre-Action Protocol. The report also provides information by local authority for the highest and lowest number of mortgage claims and landlord claims per 1,000 households.
