A GRIMSBY trader fears his business could be forced to close after he was apparently scammed out of £4,000 for a new van.
Tyas Stark, owner of Stark’s Appliances, in Hainton Avenue, said he is “gutted” and “totally broke” after shelling out for the Mercedes Sprinter on online selling site Gumtree. He said he paid the sum on November 20 and has heard nothing since, and is unable to reach the seller.
Now he fears the lost cash, partly made up by a loan, will leave his “one-man band” unable to survive the traditionally quiet December and January period.
And he wants to warn others to be extra careful when buying online to avoid being stung.
Tyas said: “I’m just devastated. I came into work and I was throwing up because I had to borrow money to put towards it. It was a big chunk of money and I’ve lost it.”
He was searching the internet for a new van to replace his existing business van which is not big enough.
Each week he has to borrow a trailer from out of town in order to pick up his stock, costing him time and money. The new van would eliminate the need for that, and enable him to make fewer delivery trips.
