Law school red-faced after announcing Nelson Mandela's death
    05 July 2013

A US law school has apologised after it mistakenly announced that Nelson Mandela had died.

Last week the University of Maryland School of Law stole a march on the world's press, and Mr Mandela himself, by announcing his death on its website. In her tribute Dean Phoebe Haddon said she was "deeply saddened by the passing of Mr Mandela", but hoped that he would "continue to inspire us, even in death."

    Ah well, he's suffered worse
The law school's embarrassment has been compounded by the fact that its statement was 75% shameless marketing. It plugged the school's "well-established" legal links with South Africa, its "rich and vibrant" exchange programme and it listed South African justices who have visited it (apparently on the basis that some had been appointed by Mandela).

When US site Above the Law pointed out that Mandela was still alive, the law school replaced its puff piece with an apology. It said it published a draft by accident, and that when Mandela does hurry up and finally bloody die* it won't use the occasion "to advance what are simply promotional messages for the school".

Here's the touching obiturary in full:
