  • United Utilities left default/late payment on CR for 2 years, advice on compensation?

I was on the electoral role at an ex-partner's address back in 2021, and wasn't living there. Through this United utilities used this info put my name down on the water bill..

I found out about this when I was looking for my own place and had to pass a credit check. After contacting them they removed the charge from my account and said the default would fall off soon.

Lo and behold, having made a few credit limit increases with my credit cards over the years they kept on being denied. Other applications were also denied. The rejection letter suggested I check my equifax, which I did and 3x late payments & default was still on the account!

United utilities have apologised, removed the default, and offered me £150 compensation, which still leaves me in a worse position than before as I haven't been able to obtain credit for 2 years.

They have suggested that they can pay more but they need definitive proof that the default was the cause of my credit application, via a letter from my creditors. The only defect on my credit report was the default and late payment!

My CC company have stated that the decision is automated and whilst a default would deter any further requests for credit they can't offer me any official statement in writing.

Is there anything I can do or does anyone have any similar experiences?
