Is give up work temp or long term to look after elderly parent, a viable option

Rather than long term home care for elderly parent, wanting to keep them in own home with support. If you decide to help them achieve this, it means moving away temp or short to long time. Is this a good thing, what happens to own home family life costs. If you become the family carer do you get any financial or social help from council or government. Any advice please as time is ticking away and need to get things sorted within 6 weeks.
